Blacklash: Racism & The Struggle for Self-Defence

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery
In the 1960s and 70s, a generation stood tall, confronting racism on both the state and street levels. The Indian, Kashmiri Bangladeshi, and Pakistani Workers Association and the Black Peoples Alliance were among the giants who paved the way for rights and justice. As the next generation faced the resurgence of far-right nationalism and state racism, slogans like “No Justice No Peace” echoed in protests worldwide.
At the forefront of the late 70s and 80s anti-racist movements were the Asian Youth Movements, defending communities against fascists and state oppression. Now, their pivotal role is immortalized in the ‘Blacklash’ exhibition, curated by Mukhtar Dar, an activist, artist, and archivist.
Through Dar’s personal collections, ‘Blacklash’ delves into the urban rebellions and struggles of Asian and African Caribbean communities across major UK cities over two decades. Dar’s involvement with various grassroots movements solidifies his status as their unofficial artist.
The exhibition showcases original photographs, videos, drawings, paintings, and political ephemera, offering a ground-breaking insight into the era’s solidarity and unity. ‘Blacklash’ brings to light dormant archive material, unveiling a unique moment in British history.
Artistically, ‘Blacklash’ explores a distinctive aesthetic, born from Britain’s streets yet influenced by global liberation movements. It highlights various art forms deployed in protests, underscoring the art of Black public dissent.
For those seeking to understand the sacrifices of 80s activists and the shoulders on which the current generation stands, ‘Blacklash’ is a must-see. Curated by Mukhtar Dar and Raj Pal, presented by Kalaboration Arts in partnership with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and supported by BRIG, this exhibition contributes to the ongoing discourse of the Black Lives Matter movement and decolonization efforts.
